I hate talking about myself because it normally implies I have an idea for what I'm doing in life.
I don't.
Really. I don't.
This much I know: I'm a junior at Indiana University studying Marketing and Professional Sales at the Kelley School of Business while also pursuing a certificate in Journalism through IU's newly created Media School.
Professionally, I'm the lead writer for Indiana Athletics at IUHoosiers.com. I write stories on all 24 IU Varsity Sports, but I primarily work with the football and basketball programs, depending on the season.
"Wait. So you're a journalist writing about the team...But you're paid by the team? Isn't that PR?"
Yes, and no. While my work is distributed by Indiana University Athletics, I am by no means a PR writer. Actually, my job hasn't changed since my previous newspaper experience (which we'll get to in a second) at all, actually. My work is the same unbiased journalism people who have been following my work can come to expect. Sometimes, I'm a little too pessimistic, actually. But I'm working on that.
I provide daily coverage of the Indiana football program. I'll soon be doing the same with the men's basketball program. My other time is devoted to writing at least one feature on every other active Indiana University sport in a given week. I also attend most every Indiana University Athletics home game (I think, as of Sept. 23, I've missed three of any kind) and write stories from there.
Before taking my current writing gig with IU Athletics, I spent two years working at the Indiana Daily Student. At the IDS, I spent two years as the IU women's soccer beat reporter, two years covering the Men's and Women's Little 500 and a year covering IU men's basketball, IU women's basketball and Indiana football. Somehow, I also managed to cover water polo, men's and women's tennis, men's golf, the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400 and an assortment of other sports in that time as well.
I also spent two semesters editing the sports section. I was an assistant sports editor in the Spring of 2014 and the sports editor in the Fall of 2014.
But why did you leave the IDS after sophomore year?
Good question. Mostly because I hate staying in one place and wanted change. I found writing for IU Athletics to be a unique challenge. I joined IU in May of 2015 and have been there ever since.
If I end up in journalism, I hope to be covering motorsports one day. That's what I really love.
Oh. And that business degree. I'm not sure what I'm doing with that yet.
Hopefully I figure it out before I graduate.
